You can host a portfolio free, on your own domain name, without building it by hand. Ask an AI assistant to build the portfolio, let it publish the site to a host with a free plan that includes a custom domain, and point the name you bought at it. The hosting costs nothing; the domain name itself is the only thing you pay for, and only if you do not already own one.
What a portfolio actually needs
Less than most hosts sell you. A portfolio is a handful of pages: who you are, your work, a way to reach you. Images are the heaviest part. It needs to load quickly on a phone, because that is where a recruiter or a client opens the link you sent, and it needs to be at an address that is yours.
It does not need a database, a content system or a monthly plan. Those are what turn a free portfolio into a paid one.
The one thing to check in any free plan

gives you a subdomain of theirs, which is fine for a draft and looks like a draft on a CV. Here the

The other limits rarely matter for a portfolio. On the free plan here that is two websites, 50 MB per website and 100,000 requests a month. Keep photos sensibly sized, which your assistant can do for you, and you will not come near any of them.
Building and publishing it
- Sign up with a Google account and copy the line on your dashboard.
- Paste it into an assistant that can publish. Antigravity is free.
- Describe it: "A portfolio for a freelance illustrator. A home page with six pieces in a grid, a page per project, an about page and a contact link. Calm, lots of white space."
- Give it your images, or ask it to leave spaces you fill in later.
- It publishes the site and gives you the address.
Changing it later is the same conversation: "Add the book cover I finished this week to the top of the grid." Every version is kept, so nothing you replace is lost.
Pointing your domain at it
Ask your assistant to connect your domain. It tells you the record to add at the company you bought the name from, usually one line, and the certificate is issued automatically once it resolves. The first few minutes can look broken while the change spreads; that is normal.
If you do not own a name yet, the site works perfectly well at its free
address ending in .dashploy.app until you do.

Is a free portfolio good enough to send to clients?
Yes, if it is at your own name and loads quickly. Visitors cannot tell what you pay for hosting. They can tell whether the address is yours.
Can I add a contact form?
Yes. A form that opens the visitor's email app works on any site. A form that saves messages for you to read runs code on a server, and that is included on the free plan too.
What happens if my portfolio gets a lot of attention?
You are emailed well before the monthly allowance runs out. If a free site does reach it, it stops serving until the month resets or you move to a paid plan, and visitors see a short page saying so; nothing is deleted. A paid plan keeps serving for a while past its allowance, more slowly. For a portfolio, 100,000 requests a month is a great deal of attention.
